The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston provides shift differential pay for classified employees whose work day differs from the normal 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Shift differential pay is typically approved for positions in departments that require around-the-clock coverage or operations that consistently require late evening or night coverage.
Shift differential is available, at the discretion of the supervisor, when at least 1/2 of the individual’s scheduled hours fall between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. Shift differential is paid on an hourly basis for all regularly scheduled hours worked on an approved shift.
Supervisors are responsible for identifying the shifts eligible for differential pay, the positions that will receive the differential pay, and for communicating the information to their employees. A supervisor must be consistent in applying the chosen practice concerning shifts and eligible positions.
