FLSA child labor provisions restrict the type of jobs that minors may hold. Minors are not eligible for employment in occupations declared hazardous. FLSA defines minors as individuals less than 18 years of age. However, they recommend that employers follow child labor guidelines for employees age 18 or less. UT-Houston follows the FLSA recommendation to apply guidelines for employees age 18 or less. Prior to employment of a minor, supervisors must complete the "Clearance Request for Minor in the Workplace Study or Employment" form and submit to Environmental Health and Safety (EHS).
