Leaders must be actively involved in discussing the institution's compensation program with employees. The leader’s role in compensation encompasses the following:
- Know the UTHSC-Houston compensation program so employee questions can be ansered and resolved quickly and efficiently..
- Ensure employees know their job title, salary range and role and responsibilities.
- Conduct a formal performance review once a year. In addition, leaders should communicate expectations when employees are promoted or transferred into a new job.
- Ensure the job descriptions are current and accurate. Develop desk or departmental job descriptions to more clearly define what is done in your particular area, unless the generic job description is a very close match.
- Continue monitoring employees' salaries, skills and experience and performance.
- Be familiar with non-base salary benefits such as paid leave, insurance, retirement, recreational facilities, flex schedules and non-monetary rewards.
When a job changes significantly or you need to develop a new job, compensation can assist you to determine if an existing job title/description is suitable. The job will need to be evaluated by the compensation team and UT System.
