Purpose of the I-9
All new employees hired after November 6, 1986 must complete a Federal I-9 form. This form documents a new employee’s (both citizen and non-citizen) identity and eligibility to work in the United States.
Completing the I-9 form
The I-9 form needs to be completed and signed by all new employees and reviewed and signed by an authorized representative of the university. Section 1 of the form must be completed no later than the employees first day of work. Section 2 of the form must be completed no later than 3 business days after the first day of work. It is against the law to employ someone who has not presented appropriate and acceptable documentation to complete the I-9.
