Types of Job Changes/Salary Actions
If any of the following job changes (promotion, downgrade, transfer, lateral movement) involves accepting a position in another department, then the employees are subject to a 120-day probationary period with an optional 60-day extension at the supervisor's discretion.

Promotion
A promotion is a movement to a position that has a higher salary range than the employee's current position. Promotional increases may be any amount up to 10% of the employee's current base salary. An exception is for for employees whose base salary is less than $25,000, any amount up to $2,500 may be awarded at the discretion of the designated budgetary official. A promoted employee's new salary must be at or above the minimum of the new salary range. When necessary, a larger increase may be awarded to ensure that the employee's salary will be at the minimum of the new salary range. Promotional salary increases cannot be awarded that would place the employee's salary above the maximum of the new position's salary range.

Downgrade
A downgrade is a movement to a position that has a lower salary range. Downgrades may be voluntary or involuntary. Involuntary downgrades may be due to performance issues or organizational administrative changes. The employee's salary may or may not be lowered. Generally, the employee's salary in the new position should be within the new position's salary range.

Transfer

A transfer is a movement from one department (losing department) to another department (gaining department) that may or may not include a change in job title or salary. A transfer is involved when there is a change in any of the seven digits of the organization code in Budget/Payroll/Personnel System (BPPS). This movement may occur in conjunction with a lateral, promotion, downgrade or when transferring to a position of the same job title.

Lateral Movement

A lateral is a movement from one position to another position that has the same salary range. Consequently, there is no change in salary. If the lateral movement involves a change in a department or in any of the seven digits of the organization code in Budget/Payroll/Personnel System (BPPS), the L2 event must be entered in combination with an L1 transfer event.
