Purpose
Performance appraisal is a formal written process, which identifies employee contributions and workplace behaviors. The primary reason for appraising performance is to provide feedback and to encourage employees to perform at their best so that the organization can reach its mission and goals. Rewarding employees relative to these efforts and contributions reinforces their behaviors in a manner that increases the likelihood that they will achieve their own personal as well as organizational goals.
Performance Appraisal Process Overview
During an annual performance appraisal session, the supervisor and the employee will discuss past performance and develop performance standards and objectives for the coming year. During the year, verbal communication should occur between the supervisor and employee to monitor progress and offer praise and suggest areas for improvement and/or continued development. At the end of the year, when both meet for a formal performance appraisal, the employee should have a good indication of his/her performance level.
The formal performance appraisal session is an opportunity to review results and accomplishments for the past year and make plans for improvement. A candid discussion of the employee's strengths and weaknesses can provide valuable input for the next performance planning session.
