How do I separate an employee?
The departure of an employee will require performing several UT-Houston procedures and ensuring federal laws are followed. To determine the procedures to be followed you must determine whether the separation is voluntary (resignation or job abandonment or involuntary (termination).

Voluntary Separation

  • Resignation - Employees who voluntarily separate from UT-Houston should provide their supervisor with a two week notice period or communicate their needs for a shorter notice period. It is customary for supervisors to receive a letter of resignation from a resigning employee. Supervisors should respond in writing to the employees notice to resign, confirming the employees separation date.
  • Job Abandonment (No Call, No Show) - An employee who has any absence of more than three days without proper notification of the immediate supervisor will be considered as job abandonment and voluntary termination of employment. For additional information see HOOP Policy 5.03 Attendance Policy.

Involuntary Separations

  • Termination of Probationary Employees - All classified employees are subject to a 120-day probationary period on appointment with an option to extend an additional 60 days. In addition, all classified employees, on promotion, transfer, lateral movement, or downgrade to a classified position in another department, are subject to a 120-day probationary period. Employees within their initial 120 day probationary period must be reviewed by the 60th day and by the 120th day. For additional information see HOOP Policy 5.13 Disciplinary Actions and HOOP Policy 3.06 Termination of Employment
