Never Stop Learning
It's your responsibility to keep abreast of your field, to update your skills and to seek formal training whenever possible. Visit the Human Resources-Training calendar for professional development opportunities facilitated in house by the Human Resources training staff and 'adjunct faculty'. Also, visit the All Training Web Page for information on other areas within UTHSC-H that offer professional development opportunities. If your department has professional development funds.. use them! Seek opportunities for cross-training within UTHSC-H and ask others to share their knowledge.
Do Some Self Analysis
Certain skills and aptitudes that you haven's used lately may serve you well with some new packaging. Also, think about the 'soft' skills you possess: negotiating, public speaking, team building, etc., and make a list of the characteristics and people qualities most organizations find valuable.
Expand Your Horizons-Network! Try to make as many contacts and acquaintances as you can. The more people who know you, know your skills and positive attitude, the more choices you will have. If you are a member of a professional organization be an active member; attend meetings and education sessions and network!
Don't Stagnate-Keep Moving
This does not mean you should job hop, but that you shouldn't grow complacent or apathetic about your present position. The savvy employee is constantly seeking ways to improve their department's methods, processes, and always has an eye out for future career possibilities. Update Your Resume All professionals should have an updated resume if it has been a while since you have updated your resume, you are not being proactive. Begin to do a through self-evaluation of all your skills, strengths, accomplishments, aptitudes, career interests, etc. A well-written, well-thought-out resume makes you more aware of your own skills, interests and abilities and can help you target area for continued self-development.
