Guidelines for Student Appointments

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston offers student appointment opportunities for individuals who are enrolled in a degree or certification program at any UT Component. Since the student's primary objectives are academic, the Dean or his/her designee of the school in which the student is enrolled is responsible for authorizing student appointments. Opportunities of this kind are subject to availability of funds.

Effective July 1, 2000, student employees who meet the following criteria may be eligible for exemption from FICA tax (Social Security and Medicare). If a student is exempt from paying FICA tax, place in appropriate job code and title, designated by the words (FICA exempt) at the end of the title on the new hire PA.

Students with appointments of at least 50% time for 4-1/2 months or more are eligible to participate in the UTHSCH group insurance program, UTFLEX and receive Premium Sharing.

The attached Student Rate Schedule identifies the designated student job titles, job codes, and salary ranges established by UTHSCH.

IMPORTANT: All individuals are required to present proof of identity and employment eligibility, as specified by the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.

As part of the pre-employment process the student employee must complete The Employment Eligibility Form (I-9) in the Human Resources department prior to, or on, the appointment start date.

Failure to produce official documentation within the time allotted will be grounds for immediate separation. Appointment may be resumed only when the required information has been furnished to Human Resources.
